Starting Configuration

Plain AR-15-Style Rifle

A rifle without a weapon-mounted light is at a serious disadvantage in low-light shooting conditions. Without a reliable white light, the user may struggle to identify a target, assess the surrounding area or maintain situational awareness before firing. Compare the INFORCE WML, WMLx, ARC 350 and ARC 650 to see how each weapon light changes the size, balance, rail space and overall profile of an AR-style 5.56 rifle.

No weapon light installed Select WML, WMLx, ARC 350 or ARC 650 to compare mounted configurations.

Before choosing a light

Check the available rail type, the position of your support hand, sling clearance and whether you prefer direct thumb activation or a remote switch.

Mounting and Selection Guide

How to Build a Practical AR Patrol Rifle Light Setup

A useful rifle light setup must do more than produce a large lumen number. The light needs to fit the available rail space, place the controls within reach and provide enough beam intensity for the distances at which the rifle may be used.

01

Choose a Mounting Position

Common mounting positions include 12 o’clock, 3 o’clock, 9 o’clock and angled positions near 10:30 or 1:30. The right position depends on the rail, support-hand grip, sights, sling and activation method.

02

Keep the Controls Within Reach

The activation control should be reachable without forcing a major change in grip. WML-series lights use an integrated rear switch, while the ARC platform supports direct tailcap and remote-switch configurations.

03

Control Barrel and Rail Shadow

Moving the light toward the front of the handguard can reduce the amount of the beam blocked by the barrel, muzzle device or rail. The light should still remain protected from unnecessary impact, blast and heat exposure.

Visible and Infrared Illumination

White Light Versus White/IR Rifle Lights

White light supports unaided observation and identification in dark environments. It is the standard choice for a patrol rifle, home defense rifle or general-purpose 5.56 rifle used without night vision.

Infrared illumination is intended for use with compatible night vision equipment. IR light is not a substitute for visible white light, and the user still needs a suitable method of identifying objects when operating without night vision.

The WML and WMLx families are offered in white-light and white/IR configurations. Because these are separate products, select the model that matches the rifle’s intended equipment and operating environment.

Compact or Long Range

Choosing the Right Light for a 5.56 Rifle

WML

Best for a minimal, lightweight setup with simple direct activation and limited rail-space demands.

WMLx

Adds output and reach while preserving the integrated WML-series mounting and control system.

ARC 350

Provides high candela and modular Scout-pattern compatibility in a shorter 18350-powered package.

ARC 650

Provides the greatest output, reach and runtime for a full-size AR patrol setup or rural-use rifle.

Final Setup Check

Test the Rifle as a Complete System

  • Confirm the light and mount remain tight after live fire.
  • Check that the sling cannot cover the lens or controls.
  • Verify the support hand can activate the light from a normal grip.
  • Inspect for excessive barrel, sight or handguard shadow.
  • Use the lockout feature during storage and transport when applicable.
  • Confirm the selected battery type is available and properly charged.
